Here is my story. Can it become yours?
Welcome! When it comes to clinical trials, my family has been both lucky – and blessed. We know it, and we are forever grateful for it. And while we know that, sadly, this will not be the outcome for every patient and every family, we know than it can become true for some families, and that is why I have chosen to finally publish this website.
I have been helping people – family, friends, and even complete strangers – find and apply for clinical trials since January 1987. That was when my father, 71, was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. It was inoperable, since it had already spread to his bones and liver. He was given a prognosis of six months to two years. And a very painful ending.
So I called my oldest brother, Bob, and asked him, “Hey – are we just going to take this lying down? Are we going to just give up and let nature take its course?” And we both determined the answer: Hell no! The next day I took a leave of absence from my job as an editor in Washington, D.C., and he took emergency leave from his position as a college professor in Norfolk, Va.
The next day we began our research at the National Library of Medicine on the campus of the National Institutes of Health NIH) in Bethesda, Md., and, in less than a week, we found a new protocol being offered by the National Cancer Institute (one branch of NIH) that had just begun enrolling patients, and we hit paydirt. Dad was easily able to withstand the chemotherapy regimen that he was given at the massive clinical center at NIH, which he was given only three days per month in this unique protocol, and soon he was in full remission! He would go on to live a very rich, full, and healthy life until halfway into his 81st year.
These were very special years. Years in which my father lived to know six more grandchildren, to continue working for as a radar engineer at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory; to win “Teacher of the Year” for adjunct engineering faculty at George Washington University; to buy and enjoy a beautiful new home; and enjoy life in so many ways.
My hopes for this site and for you.
My hope and prayer is that all who are reading this website in hopes of finding a better treatment than what they are being offered in commercial medicine. will find a clinical trial with the information I have provided on this website. And that you will find a trial offering you the best possible treatment.
